If you’re considering having rhinoplasty done, you’re likely wondering when you'll be wearing glasses again. Your surgeon might permit you to wear glasses right away, but often they'll be ruled out for two to six months. Here are some tips and options to consider.
- Put Healing First. You’re going to need a few weeks after surgery to recover. You’ll be dealing with bruising around your nose and eye area. Bruises can linger for two to three weeks. If you can schedule time off from work—to let the incisions and bruises heal in relative peace, quiet, and privacy—do.
- Wear Glasses With Your External Cast. An external nose splint will likely adorn your face after surgery, and it stays on for a week. This nose-shaped cast guards your nose and its shape during healing, and it prevents swelling. Glasses will not hinder its important work. But be ready to have a backup plan after your external cast comes off.
- When the Cast Comes Off, Protect Your Nose With Bridgeless Glasses or Contacts. Your nose, particularly the nasal dorsum or bridge, needs the care to heal well. After the cast comes off, your surgeon might not permit you to wear glasses for two to six months. Glasses that place no weight on the bridge of your nose, called bridgeless glasses, can be a solution. Disposable contact lenses are another option. Just be sure to compare prices and start the process of getting used to them early!
- Avoid the Sun. Sunglasses are usually best avoided after rhinoplasty—but then again, the sun itself must be avoided! Sunbathing those recent incisions could result in visible scars. When you must go outside, wear a hat with a wide brim. Stay in the shade.
