What Patients Can Expect After Rhinoplasty

Have you ever considered getting a nose job? You wouldn’t be alone. It’s estimated by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons that rhinoplasty is routinely in the top five most popular cosmetic procedures. In 2015 alone, around 217,000 people submitted to having their noses reshaped in this way. Your specific doctor will brief you on what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. Here are some tips on how to best deal with your recovery after rhinoplasty surgery.

Prepare For Swelling

You are going to be bruised and swollen for up to two weeks after the surgery. So don’t make any plans where you’ll have to be photographed. Makeup probably isn’t going to cover the discoloration around the area, so it’s best to be prepared for this fact. Use cold compresses to combat the swelling and help with the pain. Your doctor will prescribe the proper amounts of pain medication if you need it.

Keep Your Head Elevated

As much as possible, it’s better to keep your head up to alleviate some of the swelling. Even though you might feel like laying down and resting, it’s best to sit up as much as possible. Prop yourself up on some pillows to get as comfortable as you can while you recuperate.

The Bandages Will Be On For a Week

You can expect to wear the facial bandages for about a week until your doctor removes them in his office. Don’t peek before they do, because those bandages are in place for a reason.

Keep in mind that rhinoplasty can be used to reshape the nose area, but many times people also have the surgery to correct breathing problems in the nasal passage area. It’s not totally a vanity procedure in many cases. You can expect to be fully healed and back to your old routines in about 30-90 days.
